I have had the pleasure of getting to know Dr. Karen Wyatt a little bit, and I am truly amazed at her dedication, and her down to earth approach, to End of Life matters. Dr. Wyatt is a family physician, and has spent much of her career as a hospice medical director, caring for dying patients in their homes. She has written several books and has a online interview series, End of Life University (eol university.com). Needless to say, Karen's messages are powerful!
I recently finished Dr. Wyatt's book "What Really Matters", and I read something that resonated deeply with me. Dr. Wyatt wrote about there being a "profound opportunity at the end of life for transformation to occur, bringing with it a new and wise perspective of the meaning and purpose of life". This is one message that I wish our society would try to understand.....That death is natural, AND, end of life can bring transformation to those bearing witness to it. As a society, we deny that death is a natural process, and in denying this basic truth, we restrict ourselves the opportunity to be open to spiritual and emotional transformations. Dr. Wyatt writes about "The Gift of Mortality" in that life is a gift and this gift will not last forever. If we assume our lives will last forever, and we strive to be forever "young", there would be no shift towards the spiritual. I believe that "Death Awareness" is all about this shift - spiritually and emotionally - with life and end of life matters. Let's start A Necessary Conversation, so we can explore, empower and enrich each of our lives. Please click on the link to "What Really Matters" below.
